In the hype of a glitter-soaked Eurovision, Liverpool’s Queer heart explodes onto the scene louder than a drag queen screaming ‘wig sale!’ in this cornerstone documentary about Liverpool’s Eurovision, told through a queer lens.

From interviewing international superstars to local Scouse nuisances, the presenters navigate the journey of Eurovision in Liverpool with warmth and humour, picking up new friends and insights along the way –

 

LIFTING THE VELVET CURTAIN

on Liverpool’s LGBTQIA+ community, the film is guided by Claire, Chloe, Felix, Brendan and Beck as they explore the complicated narrative of layered identity on an international scale–encountering war, allyship, joy, music, activism and queer love in the face of it all, this documentary intimately investigates how Eurovision has become a resonating platform for self-expression and acceptance. But its not just a cheesy love in, Queerovision exposes the limitations within a capitalist consumer society. Queers are the hot ticket at Eurovision but will they ever be elevated beyond entertainment – in their to struggle to gain equality.

(shy and retiring enby by day, notorious drag king Thick-Van-Dyke by night) dies by excitement over childhood-obsession Jake Shears backstage and bonds with Sofia of Ukraine Pride amidst discussing the impact of war on community and the urgency of international allyship

CLAIRE

Claire (Bisexual Poet and Psychotherapist-extraordinaire) storms Liverpool ONE’s stage with a poetical, political rallying before talking Euro-bangers with the South Asian Bitten Peach Drag troupe.

CHLOE

(Tuebrook’s Bisexual answer to Cruella Deville) whips out her Ukrainian for a chat with 2018 Eurovision contestant MELOVIN   These Presenters bring the L,G,B,T & Q + to the forefront of Eurovision as the city’s event of a lifetime unfolds, asking “What’s behind the glitter and the gloss?”

FELIX

Felix Mufti (Liverpool’s claim to fame; Sex Education, Be Gay Do Crime) talks top-picks, top surgery and tops it off by wreaking havoc with their top off. Oh and driving a yellow submarine!

From Drag Kings to Scouse Queens, LGBTQ+ Music to local Activist Visionaries – First Take’s Queerovision captured the most anticipated international festival of the year during it’s Liverpool legacy. Celebrating being ‘united through music’ as Liverpool played host to the world’s largest multicultural music festival, we explored queer identity, community, politics and music.

What does a queer vision for Europe look like? How can we learn from the past, explore the present and build a future that’s better and kinder.
